Boston Hassle

“Their choice of baroque instruments and their use of chaos sprinkled throughout the song is comforting and jovial, reminiscent of a crowded tavern where the local bard shares their plights as a queer person. I found my head bobbing along, not only to the jaunty beat, but also in understanding. As a Non-Binary person, the message this song communicates is one in which I recognize; my own gender identity would not be perceivable through the way I present.”-Basker Boyer

The Art of Being Queer Blog

“Storytelling is key to the resilience of any group of people, and the story Natan weaves on “My Name (Is Joanna)” is one that underscores the necessity for queer and trans people to own their narratives. “There’s power in the name I choose to give,” says Natan in the opening of the song. The song then unfurls into an orchestral folk-punk shanty, taking notes from Amanda Palmer, Debbie Friedman, and Arlo Guthrie. If Alice’s Restaurant hosted a queer cabaret, “My Name (Is Joanna)” would be the shining leading number.”

GBH: Tie-dying, Woodworking, and Other creative ways musicians are finding work during the PANDEMIC

“Rafael Natan, who performs under the name Flight or Visibility, has had a part-time job ever since working as a freelance musician. "I've worked in an escape room, I've worked as a house manager at a concert hall, I've done anything that people will hire me to do," they tell me.

Natan is happy to do a variety of jobs, but their passion is in music education. They have experience teaching and assisting through the Boston Children's Chorus, Boston Public Schools, the New England Conservatory, and other local music programs. When the pandemic hit, Natan sought a low-risk way to do the work they love, and started working for a small summer program at a church, then ventured into private childcare and tutoring.”

Music Video review: Second Society Report

“Flight or Visibility take their track to the next level with the help of director and animator Guadalupe Campos. Intercutting a mix of bright, cartoon-style animations and live action shots of Natan, the video gives a play by play of the track’s narrative- starting in a cafe in the first verse. Recounting several situations in which people are often misgendered or where people are quick to make assumptions about those around them, the cartoon also features several of Natan’s friends singing the lyric “my name is Joanna” along with them. Showcasing just how widespread the trans/non-binary community is and reminding viewers not to make pre-determined judgements solely based on how someone acts or looks.”
